Central Dalmatia

Šibenik and Krka

Šibenik offers a quieter old town, many stone stairways and close access to Krka National Park.

Why go

Why visit Šibenik and Krka?

Šibenik has a slower pace than Split, with stone lanes, small squares and an old town that climbs uphill. Expect many stairs as you explore.

It is also the closest town to Krka National Park and works well as a base for a waterfalls day. Travellers who prefer a smaller historic centre may appreciate the quieter rhythm.

Highlights

  • St. James Cathedral is a Gothic-Renaissance cathedral built entirely of stone and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Old-town lanes and stairways lead to the medieval Four Wells cistern.
  • St. Michael's Fortress and Barone Fortress offer views above the town.
  • Boat trips reach nearby islands including Zlarin and Prvić.
  • Krka National Park includes Skradinski buk waterfall and wooden walkways.

When to go

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are best for walking and for Krka, when the landscape is greener and there are fewer crowds than in July and August. Summer is hot and the waterfalls are busiest.

Šibenik in winter

Šibenik is quieter in winter but remains lived in all year. Krka National Park stays open, although some park boats and routes do not run in colder months and opening hours are shorter, so check the park website.

Bus, ferry and on foot

Getting there

Long-distance buses connect Šibenik with Zagreb, Split and Zadar. The bus station is on the seafront, a short walk from the old town. Krka's main entrances are Lozovac and Skradin; seasonal park transport runs from both, so check np-krka.hr before travelling.
